The Taycan represents Porsche's foray into the electric vehicle space, and it does not disappoint. The Taycan is a technological masterpiece that manages to deliver incredible comfort and effortless driving one moment and then, with the twist of a knob, world-beating performance the next. How one car can do both so well is a little baffling.

But all that technology and capability comes at a high price. The Taycan is not cheap, and we found some of Porsche's touchscreen tech to be needlessly complicated — Luddites, steer clear.

Overview

Porsche's Taycan was the company's first fully electric vehicle when it debuted for the 2020 model year, and it was clear from the get-go that the company had done its homework. This wasn't some sort of half-baked release. Rather, the Taycan was everything we expected from the brand: fun to drive, comfortable and highly customizable. For 2024, the Taycan integrates Spotify music streaming into the infotainment system, freeing your phone from the task, but is otherwise unchanged from last year. As always you'll need to spend a little time figuring out which configuration is best for you.

Am I Ready for an EV?

EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work ^{This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.}

Edmunds spotlight: The Taycan's lineup

The Taycan comes in a few different shapes and styles. The sedan is a sleek, fastback shape not unlike a four-door version of Porsche's classic 911 coupe. There are also two wagon-style versions with a long, flat roof: the Sport Turismo and the Cross Turismo. They're nearly identical, but the former rides lower to the road and has small visual differences. The base Taycan sedan is rear-wheel-drive; the rest are all-wheel-drive. Some models are only available in specific trims. As with many things Porsche, it's complicated. But the Taycan is practical, with DC fast-charging ability that allows it to reach 80% charge in less than 30 minutes (at a 350-kW charging station in the right conditions).

Competitors to consider

The only real compromises the Taycan makes relative to other electric sedans are its shorter EPA-estimated range and less rear seat legroom. The top-end models are also pretty pricey relative to the BMW i7, Mercedes EQS and Tesla Model S. But the Taycan manages to be cutting-edge in virtually every other metric we evaluate. It's a stunning example of Stuttgart's ability to produce a car that's thoroughly modern, rapid, comfortable, attractive and still distinctly a Porsche. How does the Taycan drive? We expected a lot from the Taycan, and in common Porsche fashion, it overdelivers. We thought it'd be quick and it is. At Edmunds' test track, our 4S test car ripped from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Did we mention this car weighs over 5,100 pounds? That's as much as a Ford F-150.

You wouldn't know it from the way it goes around corners either. There's the effortless balance and ease of a rear-wheel-drive sports car, but with ridiculous amounts of traction and thrust exiting corners. It kind of feels like cheating. The brakes feel and perform amazingly, offering ample stopping power and none of the artificialness that's common among today's EVs and hybrids. The Taycan does casual cruising well too, with the exception of its lack of automatic regenerative braking. Some EVs provide enough regen when you lift off the accelerator that you often don't need to touch the brake pedal. Not so in the Taycan.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Taycan? The seating is cushy but not enveloping, but only the sport seats provide the lateral support needed for any dynamic driving. Still, we managed 9.5 hours behind the wheel in a day without feeling completely beat-up, so that says a lot. The rear seats aren't nearly as good, with their overly prominent lumbar support, tight toe room and a slightly elevated floor height.

Ride comfort, on the other hand, is impressive. Given how much the Taycan weighs and how well it handles, the ride is incredibly well composed. It's complemented by a very quiet cabin. And it's not just the absence of engine noise that's impressive, but also the car's insulation from outside noise in general.

The single biggest miss here is an overcomplicated climate control system, particularly the virtual vent controls. There's a bit of a lag time when you adjust the vent position, and it's quite distracting if you're on the go. If the AC system wasn't so effective in its auto mode, this would be a bigger issue.

Interior

How’s the interior? The Taycan's touchscreen interface is pretty good but not perfect. The lower touchscreen controls the climate settings but can also be used to navigate the upper touchscreen through its virtual touchpad and shortcut buttons. Like other touchscreens, the Taycan's is prone to smudges, though thankfully they only are noticeable when the system is off. If you're not open to taking some time to learn new things, you'll probably hate this interface.

When it comes to getting in and out, the Taycan is more like a sports car than a sedan, especially if the air suspension isn't raised to its friendliest setting. Once inside, there's lots of space up front, but the rear seat is small for a car this long, and the lack of toe space under the front seats makes it feel more cramped. Rear passengers should watch their heads as the swoopy roofline runs pretty low.

Even though the rear window is pretty narrow, rearward visibility is perfectly fine. And it's even better out front thanks to the thin windshield pillars. The door-mounted mirrors ensure objects don't get obscured when you're turning. The worst part of visibility is the reverse camera and its wide, distorted fish-eye lens perspective.

Technology

How’s the tech? The optional Bose surround-sound system delivers punchy sound with impressive clarity, even when cranked up to irresponsible volumes. The nav system is easy to learn on the fly and has the ability to display various map views within the gauge cluster even when Apple CarPlay is active. CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration comes standard. A wireless charger and four USB-C charging ports are also included.

Our pricey test vehicle was missing a lot of common driving aids including adaptive cruise control, and the ones it had were a little overbearing at times. The optional surround-view camera didn't operate for an entire week, but when it did finally right itself, it worked seamlessly with the parking assist sensors. The reverse camera picture looks like a fish-eye lens, and while you can see a lot of what's behind you, the skewed image makes it difficult to gauge proximity to things.

Storage

How’s the storage? The rear trunk space, at 14.3 cubic feet, is a bit small for how large the Taycan is, and boxes will need to be pushed in farther than you think to clear the slope of the trunklid. There's underfloor storage that helps, and the rear seats split 60/40 and fold down flat, lending some needed cargo flexibility. The front trunk offers an additional 2.8 cubic feet of storage and can fit a small roller bag.

There's slightly better interior storage than what most luxury sedans provide. The armrest bin is pretty modest, but a cubby beneath the lower touchscreen can store things such as sunglasses, face masks or even a small purse. The door pockets will hold a couple of water bottles, but the glovebox won't hold much beyond the owner's manual.

Car seat anchors are easy to locate, though the tilt of the rear seat bottom is steep, so proper adjustment of your child safety seat's base might be tricky. A rear-facing seat will be a bit of a squeeze behind most front occupants.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? [Editor's note: the following information is based on our testing of a 2021 Taycan 4S. Newer models might have slightly different estimates, but our general takeaways still apply.] The EPA estimates 4S with the standard battery has a range of 199 miles with a consumption of 42 kWh/100 miles, which is the EV equivalent of a gas guzzler. But in Edmunds' testing, we experienced significantly better range and consumption while driving the Taycan using settings that a typical owner would. We observed 323.3 miles of range with a consumption of 32.3 kWh/100 miles. Note that, unlike a regular car's mpg number, improved efficiency comes from a lower kWh/mile consumption figure, not a higher one.

Value

Is the Taycan a good value? Most EVs these days don't come cheap, but the Taycan is like shopping in the boutique vitamin aisle at Whole Foods instead of CVS. That said, no Taycan owner will have to worry about questionable build quality or glitchy firmware updates. And beyond the software and electronics, Porsche has a way with interiors and the tactile feel of switches and buttons, or at least the few of them that haven't migrated to the touchscreen menus.

Warranty coverage and roadside assistance for Taycan are pretty standard for the luxury class. But an onboard charger and 240-volt charge cord, assuming you have a simple matching socket installed, can save you from purchasing an entire home charging station. You'll also benefit from three years of charging at Electrify America stations, where your first 30 minutes of each visit are free (sufficient for charging to 80% battery capacity in the right conditions).

Wildcard

There was never any doubt the Taycan would be a performer, and even the base-model 4S offers plenty of thrills. Speed can be accessed anywhere, but that's expected of any luxury EV. Instead, the Taycan impresses with its composure and the sensation it delivers behind the wheel. It supplies what you'd want of any high-performance sedan when you press it, but the rest of the time it's simply an exceptionally comfortable car.

And EV or not, the Taycan is a great-looking vehicle. The shape is instantly familiar as a Porsche yet special at the same time. Porsche's first production EV aims to wow, and wow it does.

Which Taycan does Edmunds recommend?

We think the midlevel 4S provides the best value. It bumps output more than 100 horsepower over the base car and adds all-wheel drive. Checking the box for the optional Performance Battery Plus package increases output by another 53 horsepower.

Porsche Taycan models

Porsche sells the Taycan as a sedan and as a wagon that Porsche calls the Cross Turismo. There's also the Sport Turismo, which is essentially a Cross Turismo but with a lower ride height. From there you'll have to pick from a trim lineup of Base, 4S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S. For the sedan, the base Taycan and 4S are equipped with a 79-kWh battery pack and can be optioned with a 93-kWh Performance Battery Plus upgrade that comes on other models. The base model has a single electric motor that gives the Taycan rear-wheel drive, while all other trims have a second motor that enables all-wheel drive. All Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo models feature dual electric motors, all-wheel drive and the 93-kWh battery. Base
The standard Taycan has a power output of 321 horsepower. With launch control, output climbs to 402 hp for short periods in overboost mode. The Performance Battery Plus option increases output to 375 hp (469 hp in overboost). Feature highlights include:

The midgrade 4S adds dual electric motors for all-wheel drive. Output is 429 hp (522 hp in overboost mode). The Performance Battery Plus option increases output to 482 hp (562 hp in overboost mode). It includes all of the above plus:

Porsche Taycan vs. Mercedes-Benz EQE

The Mercedes-Benz EQE is a considerably bigger car than the Taycan, but it's smaller than its electric counterpart from Mercedes, the EQS. Even the AMG version of the EQE is less focused on performance than the Taycan, but it's certainly not slow. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds in our testing, less than half a second behind the quickest version of the Taycan, the Turbo S. But the truth is that both of these cars are so quick that those few ticks don't really matter. Consider the EQE if general usability, space and luxury are a priority over performance.

Porsche Taycan vs. Audi e-tron GT

The e-tron GT and Taycan are built on the same platform and share many fundamentals, including their basic layout, wheelbase and powertrains. The e-tron differs from the Taycan in tuning, but the differences are meaningful. It isn't as responsive to driver inputs and it's less sharp than the Taycan in most situations. That doesn't stop it from being a great car — it's just not as focused on driving reward as its cousin from Stuttgart. The e-tron offers a tech-savvy and thoroughly modern interior as well as unrivaled ride comfort in this class. Give it a look if razor-sharp turn-in response isn't your first priority in an electric sedan.

Porsche Taycan vs. Tesla Model S

The Model S was the most groundbreaking electric vehicle yet when it first rolled into public hands in 2012. And it's held its own remarkably well since then, delivering firsts in the segment that keep it relevant today. And if all that matters is straight-line acceleration, no other car sold can touch the Model S Plaid. But like every car in this segment, it lags behind the Taycan in control response and driving satisfaction. It's less complete than the Taycan when it comes to braking and handling. But it remains practical and easier to use than the Taycan in daily living.

What is the Porsche Taycan?

The transition to electric vehicles has made for a bit of a learning curve for most automakers, as might be expected when all you've built before are cars that run on gasoline. But Porsche has handled this new paradigm better than most because its first fully electric vehicle, the Taycan, still feels like a Porsche in all of the best ways — athletic, precise and fun — while running on electrons.

The Taycan sedan made its debut in 2020 and its lineup has grown since then, adding more and more variants as well as two wagonesque body styles: the Cross Turismo and the Sport Turismo (which we review separately). Last year's Taycan was offered in both rear- and all-wheel drive, two battery sizes, and 10 versions in total. And for 2024, that number may grow.

Now approaching its fourth birthday, the Taycan is due for a refresh if it follows the same model cycle of most other Porsche models. The Taycan has gotten consistent updates to its software over the past four years. The 2023 update increased the Taycan's range and efficiency, added wireless connectivity for Android Auto, and reworked the multimedia system to make it easier to use. Our best guess would then be that the 2024 Taycan sees styling tweaks but keeps mostly the same interior layout.

And this might be wishful thinking, but could we perhaps see a new line-topping performer? Porsche isn't likely to give the Taycan a GT3 or GT4 moniker; those will remain the domain of the sports cars. A refreshed Taycan will still compete with other sporty EVs like the Audi e-tron GT (with which it shares an architecture), Tesla Model S, and the AMG variants of the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

The two battery options will likely remain, a standard 79-kWh battery pack and an optional 93-kWh performance battery. The base Taycan and 4S come with the standard pack, while the larger pack is standard on the GTS, Turbo and Turbo S variants.

Only the base Taycan is rear-wheel-drive; the other models all have dual electric motors and therefore all-wheel drive. And all models feature an overboost mode that allows the Taycan to boost its output temporarily for added fun and/or speed. The base model offers 321 horsepower, and the figures shoot up from there to 429 hp in the 4S, 509 hp in the GTS, and 616 hp in both the Turbo and Turbo S. The Turbo S is distinguished by its overboost ceiling: 750 hp, compared to "only" 670 hp in the Turbo. How will Turbo owners ever make do?
