Subaru has redesigned its popular Crosstrek small crossover SUV for the 2024 model year, but it might be hard to tell. The new Crosstrek is about the same size inside and out, and it continues to offer a choice between two four-cylinder engines paired with standard all-wheel drive. The styling is similar, too, and despite a new infotainment system, the plastic-fantastic interior still looks like you could hose it out. But considering the previous Crosstrek's popularity, we expect the incrementally improved third-generation version to remain an appealing choice in the segment, especially in the new extra-rugged Wilderness trim level. Edmunds spotlight: The new Crosstrek Wilderness

Aside from its next-generation infotainment and safety tech, the most substantial change to the 2024 Crosstrek is the new Wilderness trim level. All Subaru crossover SUVs offer standard all-wheel drive and substantial ground clearance, making them among the hardiest off-roaders in their competitive sets. But Wilderness specification takes the Crosstrek's capability to new levels with more than half an inch of added ground clearance, all-terrain tires and revised transmission and suspension tuning. Subaru says the Crosstrek Wilderness can tow up to 3,500 pounds, and the automaker outfits it with added body cladding, water-resistant upholstery, and other special details to support adventures in the wilderness.

Competitors to consider

There are plenty of small crossover SUVs on sale today. If you want something that can match the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek in the dirt, you might want to compare this diminutive Subie to the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass. Otherwise, the roomy Chevrolet Trailblazer and stylish Mazda CX-30 are among our top picks for this class. For something roomier, consider the more expensive Subaru Forester.

How does the Crosstrek drive? Even in a class of relatively slow cars, the Crosstrek trails the pack. We tested a Crosstrek Premium with the base 2.0-liter engine. At our test track, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a lethargic 9.9 seconds. Passing is an affair that demands patience above all else in the base 2.0-liter Crosstrek; we recommend upgrading to models with the 2.5-liter engine.

The Crosstrek isn't a handling all-star, nor should it be. The steering is a little vague and there's noticeable body roll both under braking and around corners. That said, it's a smooth operator on the road and is easy to live with and use for day-to-day duties. Even better, its all-wheel-drive system will provide extra confidence in inclement weather situations and it feels sure-footed and confident in the dirt. Don't be afraid to take it on roads less traveled.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Crosstrek? The Crosstrek's ride comfort deserves special mention. This little SUV's lifted stance and chunky tire sidewall help it easily absorb road impacts. There are few potholes and even fewer manhole covers that can flummox this Subie. The seats, however, don't quite match the ride's inherent comfort. The padding is a little too soft and there isn't much in the way of lateral support. We suspect the seats in higher trims that come with different materials would be more supportive.

Wind noise was ever present on our highway drives from both the door mirror and the windscreen itself. At anything above or near 65 mph, the Crosstrek is a loud place to be, so much so that conversations at normal volume are difficult to have. The fans for the climate control are also a little too weak until you crank them all the way up, and at that point they are blaring and you'll need to keep them going to keep the cabin at whatever temperature you've set.

Interior

How’s the interior? The interior of the Crosstrek is best described as simple. There aren't too many buttons, knobs or switches, but what is there is large and easy to use without you having to look too long. The buttons on the steering wheel also have a nice tactile feel and make whizzing through the instrument menus a cinch. The infotainment screen contains most of the car's primary functions, and while the screen itself isn't the highest-resolution, big buttons and icons make it easy to use.

It also feels large inside, and with its high roofline and lengthy cabin, the Crosstrek is certainly more crossover than hatchback. The rear seat is roomy and visibility is good to the sides and rear. Add to that wide door openings and an elevated seat height that make sliding in and out of the car easy and you have a very user-friendly interior.

Technology

How’s the tech? Tech has never been Subaru's strong suit, and the Crosstrek isn't exactly challenging that perception. Our Premium-spec test car is the lowest trim level that comes with the 11.4-inch tablet-like infotainment display. While we appreciate the screen's large icons, the system can be slow to respond to your inputs.

Another pain point is the Crosstrek's stereo. While an upgraded version is available on the top-spec Limited model, most Crosstreks come with just six speakers. The result is a sound that's tinny throughout the volume range. The system also lacks any real bass and can't overcome the poor cabin acoustics. Those who enjoy in-car audio might want to stay away from anything other than the upgraded system.

Subaru does equip the Crosstrek with many standard driver aids. Their operation could be better, however. The forward collision warning system can be a little jumpy, occasionally identifying a trash can on the street as a pedestrian or car and issuing a startling warning. Lane keeping assistance warnings are triggered often, too, despite how accurately you try to keep the car in its lane. The adaptive cruise control maintained consistent gaps with other cars in traffic in our testing, but the Crosstrek's laggard acceleration occasionally means that other cars have the opportunity to cut in front of you while it struggles to catch the car that's pulled away.

Storage

7.5/10

How’s the storage? The Crosstrek has less cargo space than some top rivals. It only offers 19.9 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, which is less than what the Chevy Trailblazer and Volkswagen Taos offer. The cabin also has minimal storage for smaller items. The door pockets feel undersized and large bottles won't fit in any of the cupholders. Add to that a small center console and your loose items will likely be packing these spaces in no time.

Car seats, however, are easy to fit. The aforementioned large door openings, easy-to-access LATCH mounting points and the Crosstrek's ride height mean installation is a no-brainer. There's also a lot of room in the backseat area, making fitting even a large rear-facing seat easy.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says the Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter engine, which is what we tested, should get 29 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's an average figure for an extra-small SUV with all-wheel drive. On our real-world test route, we managed 33.4 mpg, indicating that the EPA's estimate should be pretty easy to achieve in the real world.

Value

Is the Crosstrek a good value? When so much of the Crosstrek's competition has upped its game in terms of quality, feature availability and on-road performance, the Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter feels a little lackluster. Our test Crosstrek had interior panels that featured different colors and textures and weren't very nice to the touch. This is an area competitors like the Mazda CX-30 and the Kia Seltos have nailed down, and they cost no more than the Crosstrek. The Subaru's inherent value is in what it can do off-road, but in terms of what you get out of the box, the Crosstrek is lacking.

Subaru's warranty is similarly average. It only offers three years/36,000 miles of basic warranty coverage and roadside assistance, and the powertrain is warrantied for five years/60,000 miles. While some competitors offer free maintenance, Subaru doesn't.

Wildcard

8.0/10

The Crosstrek is a favorite of those who trod the path less taken, and it's easy to see why. It's simply made and perfectly utilitarian, and while it isn't fun on the pavement, looser surfaces really suit it and Subaru's rally heritage. It would also make a fantastic camping companion. However, you're destined to see these everywhere you look, and Crosstrek ownership absolutely comes at the expense of individuality.

Which Crosstrek does Edmunds recommend?

Trust us: You're going to want a Crosstrek with the larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which at least attempts to accelerate out of its own way. But the value-packed version equipped with this engine is the Sport trim, which has hideous yellow accents on it. That inspires us to recommend the Limited trim. It gives you nearly all of the available equipment at its base price except for the desperately needed Harman Kardon premium sound system. And, though well equipped, the Limited remains price-competitive with primary off-road-oriented rivals.

Subaru Crosstrek models

Five versions of the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek are available: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Wilderness. The first four launch first and the Wilderness arrives at dealerships in the fall of 2023. The Base and Premium trims have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (152 horsepower, 145 lb-ft of torque), and the Sport, Limited and Wilderness trims use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (182 hp, 178 lb-ft). Both engines pair with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a standard all-wheel-drive system. Here's what you can expect from each trim:

3 Months Old. Major Repair Needed

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl CVT)

I bought a new 2024 Crosstrek Premium from Subaru of Kennesaw 3 months ago. The new Crosstrek is roomier than most vehicles at that price point and had plenty of cargo space to hold the luggage of a family of 4 on a weekend trip. Fuel economy averaged a little over 28 mpg. The ride was smooth and the handling more like a sedan than an SUV. Those were the high points. As far as the lows, … the acceleration has been described as “pokey” and that’s accurate. Accelerating onto a busy interstate leaves you feeling like the engine is trying to catch up. Interesting enough, there are no issues with the acceleration when resuming the cruise control set speed. It seems the Crosstrek responds much better to the computer than to the gas pedal. The computer is the MAJOR problem with this vehicle. After almost 3 months of driving it the “infotainment” or “head unit” system died; and when I say died, I mean that it has to be replaced with at least a one month wait time for a replacement part. The car can be driven without this part, but it disabled all of the safety and security features except for the locks and all A/C, phone, radio and anything else accessed by that system is gone. And here’s where insult was added to injury. I suggested that since the car was only 3 months old and already needing the equivalent of an auto brain transplant that the dealership allow me to have a different vehicle. They referred me to Subaru Corporate and the Customer Advocacy Team. What I experience with that department was the opposite of customer advocacy. Their representative said they didn’t replace cars due to a “broken radio” which is a little like calling my iPhone a fancy calculator. When I tried to ask for his manager, he gave me the old “I am the manager” routine and when I asked to speak to “someone above him” he informed me there was no one above him and directed me back to the dealership because “they should stand behind the cars they sell.” Apparently Subaru does not. Now I’m in limbo as the dealership and Subaru attempt determine who should do what in this situation. This is not my first Subaru and until this issue I was happy with the Crosstrek. Now, I can’t see myself buying another. It’s one thing to say you stand behind your vehicles and another to actually do it. I also have serious concerns about the 2024 Crosstrek given this completely unexplained malfunction so early into the life of the vehicle. I’ll be interested to see if this happens with others.

What is the Crosstrek?

Take one Subaru Impreza hatchback, raise the suspension, slap on some body cladding, and you've got yourself a Subaru Crosstrek crossover SUV. That recipe has worked wonders for Subaru since the automaker introduced the first Crosstrek more than a decade ago. In fact, Subaru says the Crosstrek is more than just successful. It calls the popular small SUV the "fastest-selling vehicle" in the company's history.

Now Subaru has launched the redesigned 2024 Crosstrek, and it's clear the automaker's smallest crossover is sticking to a tried-and-true recipe. It's essentially the same size as before and continues on with the same engines. The biggest changes relate to the 2024 model's updated styling and addition of Subaru's latest technology and driver assist features. It's also notable that versions with the 2.5-liter engine of the third-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek will roll out of the company's Indiana factory for the first time.

What's under the Crosstrek's hood?

Base and Premium trims get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (152 horsepower, 145 lb-ft of torque), while the Sport, Limited and Wilderness employ a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (182 hp, 178 lb-ft). These engines are carryovers from the prior-generation Crosstrek. The previously available six-speed manual transmission for the base engine is gone, leaving a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) as standard equipment. In all but the base trim, paddle shifters provide manual control over eight programmed transmission ratios.

All-wheel drive is standard, and most versions of the 2024 Crosstrek match the outgoing model's generous 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Exclusive to the Wilderness trim is a raised suspension that offers 9.3 inches of clearance. The automaker has improved the AWD system to offer quicker response to changing surface and driving conditions. Hill start assist is standard, along with Subaru's X-Mode traction and drive mode technology, which includes hill descent control. With the Sport, Limited and Wilderness trims, X-Mode offers Deep Snow and Mud settings in addition to Snow and Dirt.

Other mechanical details include new steering derived from the WRX sport sedan, which Subaru says will provide a more direct steering feel and quicker response for the driver and a 10% stiffer body structure. Overall, the 2024 Crosstrek is incrementally improved and drives a bit better than the old model while still being more capable off-road than most other small SUVs.

How does the Crosstrek drive?

Subaru says its core focus for the 2024 Crosstrek is to "bring joy and smiles to our adventure-seeking customers" for every day of the week including vacations. That means comfort not just in the daily gridlock but on long road trips as well. After experiencing how well the Crosstrek Premium drove, we feel like Subaru succeeded.

The ride has been improved over the previous generation, and the Crosstrek feels smooth on the highway. We also drove it off-road and also found it's capable of absorbing rougher terrain and deep ruts. The updated X-Mode system is pretty capable for maximizing available traction and keeping the Crosstrek moving, even when the car is lifting a wheel off the ground. We're also excited about the possibility of a future Wilderness model that would gain similar enhancements as those on the Forester and Outback Wilderness models.

During our brief multi-terrain drive, we were able to experience the updated steering system and it responds very well and provides good feel. While highway cruising, small inputs keep you in the lane and at slower speeds, it's easy to turn to full-lock, which will help in parking lots.

This new-generation Crosstrek is all about incremental improvements. Unfortunately, the engine would benefit from something more than that. While the Crosstrek's acceleration is adequate for the vehicle, it certainly won't wow anyone. That said, the CVT automatic responds a bit quicker than before when you step on the gas, and the engine is not as loud and rough-sounding thanks to new engine mounts.

This new-generation Crosstrek is all about incremental improvements. Unfortunately, the 2.0-liter engine would benefit from something more than that. While the Crosstrek's acceleration is adequate for the vehicle, it certainly won't wow anyone. The 2.5-liter offers a more engaging driving experience and gets the same EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined that the 2.0-liter does. A 30 horsepower bump to 182 hp makes it one of the more powerful extra-small SUVs available.

How does dual-function X-Mode work?

Dual-function X-Mode is standard on Sport and Limited trims and adds a second terrain selector: Deep Snow/Mud, which complements the existing Snow/Dirt X-Mode setting. The extra mode is designed to improve performance in tricky all-wheel-drive situations, like driving through deep mud.

We put the Deep Snow/Mud setting to the test on the side of a very muddy ski trail and found it performed essentially as advertised. Hill descent control, which manages speed and traction while going down hills, worked well. And the Crosstrek crawled its way out of deep, muddy ruts on more than one occasion thanks to the increased wheelspin.

How comfortable is the Crosstrek?

Ride comfort has been addressed with the updated suspension system due to the stiffer chassis. That's car-geek-speak for it's a more plush ride than the previous one. Being smooth on the highway is par for the course, but it can also absorb a lot of impacts on rougher roads and keep you pretty stable and not being tossed back and forth and to and fro. The updated seats have supportive bolstering and provide good cushioning as well. This would be an excellent car for long road trips.

How's the Crosstrek's interior?

As it has in the current-generation WRX sedan and redesigned 2024 Impreza, Subaru updates and refines the new Crosstrek's cabin. Still, from the materials and analog instrumentation to the switchgear and overall layout, the Crosstrek remains unabashedly a Subaru. Overall interior passenger space is essentially unchanged from the previous model.

Cloth seats are standard, with leather available in the Crosstrek Limited. Subaru's new seat designs improve support and overall comfort while reducing fatigue on longer drives. The Crosstrek's interior is also quieter when you're driving on the highway.

A dual-zone automatic climate control system is standard in every new Crosstrek. Available upgrades include a sunroof, a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, a larger touchscreen infotainment system and more.

How's the Crosstrek's tech?

Subaru offers two different approaches to the Crosstrek's infotainment and climate control systems. In the base model, the SUV features dual 7-inch touchscreen displays stacked atop one another. The top screen controls the infotainment functions, including Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite radio. The bottom screen is for the dual-zone climate system and other vehicle settings.

Upgrade to the Crosstrek Premium, Sport, Limited or Wilderness, and a sharp-looking and responsive 11.6-inch touchscreen display mounted in portrait orientation dominates the center of dashboard. It incorporates the climate system and vehicle settings and adds wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Subaru's Starlink connected services. The Safety and Security subscription plan includes automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, and a remote vehicle locator, among other features.

As you might expect from a Subaru, there are numerous safety features available for the new Crosstrek. Every trim includes steering-responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation. In addition, a next-generation EyeSight collection of driver assistance and collision avoidance systems is standard. It benefits from a wider field of view to identify potential collisions sooner, improved software, and an electronic brake booster for smoother braking operation.

During our freeway drive in the Crosstrek Premium, we were able to test the updated EyeSight driver assist technology and can report that, while the following distance is still conservative, it adapted well to the vehicle in front of it and ping-pongs in the lane much less with the active lane keeping assistance than it did with the previous-generation EyeSight.

Also new for 2024 is an available automatic emergency steering system. It helps a driver to avoid a collision at speeds under 50 mph. If the Crosstrek encounters an obstacle blocking part of the lane ahead, automatic emergency steering uses the blind-spot warning system to determine if it is safe to automatically steer the Crosstrek to the outer limit of the travel lane. This may assist a driver in avoiding the obstacle and preventing a collision.

How's the Crosstrek's storage?

Just as Subarus are known for their safety, utility is an inherent part of any SUV wearing the company's star cluster emblem. With the 2024 Crosstrek, this remains as true as ever. For example, all versions except the base trim provide standard raised roof rails that make it much easier to strap cargo to this small Subie's roof.

However, if you were hoping the redesigned 2024 Crosstrek would have more cargo space, we regret to inform you that it has instead shrunk a little bit. The outgoing Crosstrek offered 20.8 cubic feet of volume behind the back seat, and a maximum of 55.3 cubes with the back seat folded down. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek's cargo space measurements are 19.9 cubic feet and 54.7 cubes.

What are the Crosstrek's trim levels?

Five versions of the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek are available: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Wilderness. The first four launch first and the Wilderness arrives at dealerships in the fall of 2023. The Base and Premium trims have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (152 horsepower, 145 lb-ft of torque), and the Sport, Limited and Wilderness trims use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (182 hp, 178 lb-ft). Both engines pair with a CVT and a standard all-wheel-drive system. Here's what you can expect from each trim:

Subaru has undoubtedly improved the 2024 Crosstrek with this redesign. However, the changes are indeed incremental rather than dramatic, which is understandable given how successful the outgoing second-generation version is. Still, it would've been nice to see Subaru gain additional ground in engine power and cargo space, two of the weak points of the Crosstrek it replaces. We will have to stay tuned for what might come next. Subaru says hybridization and electrification are focuses for its vehicles, but so far it hasn't commented on when this might come to the Crosstrek. What is the Crosstrek?

The Subaru Crosstrek has been a solid choice for adventurous individuals who want a subcompact SUV with the capabilities to go off the beaten path. We reported a few months ago that the Crosstrek will be redesigned for the 2024 model year, kicking off the third generation. Although at first glance the new Crosstrek does not look drastically different, there are some upgrades that should please you if you choose this extra-small SUV.

The new Crosstrek unveiled and pictured above is intended for the Japanese market, so we still don't know exactly what powertrains will be available for us stateside. Currently, it comes standard with all-wheel drive and offers a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque and a more potent 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft. In addition, there's a hybrid option that grants 17 miles on all-electric power when fully charged. We sure hope to see the return of the fun six-speed manual, but we presume Subaru will go the same route it has with the 2024 Impreza, which will only come with a continuously variable automatic transmission (or CVT).

The revamped Crosstrek will not look completely different from its predecessor. It will retain its high ground clearance that allows for moderate off-roading and makes it easier to get in and out of the cabin. Some distinct changes on the exterior include a larger front grille and slim LED headlights up front, while out back there'll be redesigned taillights. Inside, an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented center touchscreen will be at hand. The seats will also be all-new in the 2024 Crosstrek with improved comfort in mind.

As for safety features, the 2024 Crosstrek will offer new stereo and mono view cameras for improved recognition of pedestrians and motorcycles. The emergency braking system will also function in a wider range of situations. There will also be a 360-degree camera to improve visibility all around and give more detailed images.
