Overview

BMW keeps hope alive for drivers who still enjoy shifting gears themselves. The 2025 BMW Z4 adds an optional six-speed manual transmission to the lineup, a boost for the already joyous and snappy roadster. The Z4 makes breezy work of highway travel and open roads, with its compliant suspension, surprisingly large trunk, power-folding fabric top, and choice of two quick engines. The Z4 is more touring two-seater than track specialist, but the new stick-shift option mixes that up a bit. Part of a package that also includes unique steering and handling settings, the six-speed gives the Z4 some extra bite absent in the automatic transmission trims.

Edmunds spotlight: More engaging and entertaining

The new Handschalter (German for "hand shift") package is only available for the six-cylinder-powered M40i trim, and it's the only way to get the six-speed manual transmission. The package also adds Vernasca leather upholstery, gloss black exterior accents, staggered wheels and tires — larger and wider in back — and unique suspension and steering tuning. It's also offered in two exclusive shades of green. The stick-shift option isn't too surprising given that the Z4's mechanical twin, the Toyota GR Supra, also offers one. (The Z4 and GR Supra were co-developed by Toyota and BMW.) But BMW says it's poured effort into making the M40i's six-speed feel like those from its lauded M series. We drove a prototype of the new trim and can attest that the manual feels slick and engaging, and the car's other enhancements — computer-assisted rear shocks, meatier steering feel, grippy rear tires — make the M40i six-speed feel more playful than the others.

Competitors to consider

The Z4 is one of an endangered species. Convertibles of all stripes are disappearing, especially those with just two seats. The Mazda Miata remains a classic of style, fun and value. It's not nearly as quick as the BMW, but it's also nearly half the price. The Porsche 718 Boxster and Chevrolet Corvette are close analogs for the Z4. The Porsche is far more expensive when comparably equipped, while the Corvette — closer to the Z4's price — is a bigger, heavier car to contend with. The affordable Ford Mustang and swankier Audi A5 and S5 are four-seat alternatives, along with the new Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet — doing its part to keep convertibles alive.

How does the Z4 drive? You might expect the four-cylinder option to pale in comparison to the six-cylinder model, but you'd be wrong. During our comprehensive testing regimen, we only found that to be true in terms of outright acceleration. The Z4 sDrive30i (that's the four-cylinder) we tested accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 5.3 seconds, while the M40i (that's the six-cylinder) fitted with the automatic transmission did the deed in a scant 4.1 seconds. Both engines offer good midrange punch, but we were especially impressed with the effortless thrust doled out by the M40i. The four-cylinder Z4 does start to lose steam toward the top of the rev band, especially at higher speeds, but it still scoots through traffic with ease.

Whichever model you choose, the brakes provide impressive stopping power. The sDrive30i we tested was equipped with the Dynamic Handling package, which we would heartily recommend, and it actually tied the M40i with a stop from 60 mph in just 104 feet. Both cars exhibited a slightly grabby brake pedal at low speeds on the street. As in many modern BMWs, the steering is mostly devoid of feeling, but it's quick, accurate, direct and stable on the highway.

Both versions we tested pulled some impressive numbers on our skidpad: 1.03 g for the sDrive30i and 1.05 g for the M40i. The Z4 lacks the razor-sharp reactions and balance of the Porsche 718 Boxster but it's still a lot of fun on a twisty road.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Z4? Ride quality and comfort depend highly on road conditions even if you're in a Z4 with the optional adaptive M Sport suspension. The Z4 cruises well on the highway and even over less than perfect pavement. That said, the seats are mounted so close to the rear axle that any bounces you do feel are fairly pronounced. The seats are shaped well, but we'd prefer more lateral support. The climate control works quickly and evenly, though there's no convenient way to sync the dual-zone system.

The most impressive part might be the Z4's relatively quiet cabin with the top up, especially for a convertible. You won't have to shout just to have a conversation on the highway, and the lack of a roof didn't seem to cause any unnecessary vibrations or rattles.

How’s the interior? The Z4's interior is surprisingly roomy for a car this small, a boon for taller drivers looking for an occasional open-air experience. Unlike some other convertibles, you won't feel claustrophobic with the top raised. The Z4 is at or near the top of the class when it comes to headroom, shoulder room and legroom. The power-operating top moves quickly and, when it's stored, doesn't eat up any cargo room in the trunk. The windshield pillar and steep windshield are something to watch out for when you're getting inside with the top down.

The driving position is fine, though the tall hood and doors do make you feel hunkered down in the car. Because the infotainment controls take up a large portion of the center console, the cupholders have been hidden away in the center console, a bit inconvenient since there's no good place to rest your arm.

Technology

How’s the tech? BMW's infotainment system is robust, but it may take you a while to learn the ins and outs of the system. Voice controls work surprisingly well. The system isn't as refined as the latest one from Mercedes-Benz, but it's better than the older system that's in most Mercedes convertibles. BMW offers both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is still a bit of a rarity for the class. There's only one USB port, though an optional wireless charging pad can ostensibly make up for the lack of ports. The audio system is fine and provides plenty of volume with the top down, but the audio quality, even from the upgraded system, is just a bit above average.

The Z4's adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning system work well, though the lane centering system can be too aggressive with its steering corrections.

Storage

How’s the storage? One of the best things the Z4 has going for it is the power-operating convertible top. Unlike many other convertibles, the top takes up no cargo space when lowered, a huge plus for those who've dealt with intrusive tops in the past.

Unfortunately, cabin storage for small items can't quite match the trunk space. The door pockets are small, and the cargo net behind the seats doesn't hold items in place very well. A split opening armrest conceals the cupholders but that means the passenger will lose their armrest when you bring along drinks.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? Both of the Z4's available engines are fairly fuel-efficient. The Z4 sDrive30i gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined, while the Z4 M40i is estimated to get 26 mpg combined. On our 115-mile highway-heavy evaluation route, we saw the sDrive30i return 26.6 mpg and the M40i an impressive 31.6 mpg. We attribute the six-cylinder's higher mileage to it simply not having to work as hard to get up to and maintain speed, especially on longer uphill grades. Like any performance car, if you drive the Z4 with any gusto, it's easy to get fuel economy figures in the teens.

Is the Z4 a good value? The Z4 looks and feels like a quality vehicle, with a relatively clean design and a premium feel to all the controls. It feels less spartan or bare than some rivals. And despite the lack of a fixed roof, we didn't notice any rattles or squeaks during our tests. Pricing and features are good for the class, and while the Porsche 718 Boxster S and Chevrolet Corvette offer more performance, they also cost considerably more than the most expensive Z4.

The warranty is above average for the class and should help alleviate some of the concerns about maintenance costs when it comes to German luxury cars.

Despite the sharp looks and strong performance figures, the Z4 isn't an out-and-out sports car. While it may lack the extra sharp handling and quick reflexes of something like a Porsche 718 Boxster and the Chevrolet Corvette, the Z4, with either engine, is a stable, comfortable and rapid enough convertible for most buyers. The sizable cargo area and quiet cabin and quick-folding convertible top help it feel right at home on the highway or a winding coastal drive.

Which Z4 does Edmunds recommend?

Purists will love the new optional manual transmission, only available on the M40i. It's the trim we'd suggest anyway, with or without the stick shift. The new manual option gets you sharper, more dynamic handling thanks to unique steering and suspension settings. But even with the eight-speed automatic transmission, the M40i delivers more power, a sportier suspension, enhanced traction with its M Sport differential, and upgraded brakes, creating a more complete performance package.

The 2025 BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel-drive two-seat roadster available in two trim levels: sDrive30i and M40i. The sDrive30i comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque. The M40i upgrades to a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder (382 hp, 368 lb-ft). An eight-speed automatic comes standard on both trims, but the M40i offers an optional six-speed manual transmission.

2022 BMW Z4 sDrive30i 2dr Convertible (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

My wife has always wanted a blue convertible roadster with a tan interior and after many years of waiting she decided to get a 2022 Z4 sDrive 30i in Mediterranean Blue Metallic with Cognac Leather with the Convenience and Premium Level Two packages. She did not opt for the sports handling package. This was her purchase and she did the research with a few suggestions by me along the way. … I wasn't sure what to expect so I was pleasantly surprised when I got behind the wheel. Most driving enthusiast sites tout the sDrive 40i with the more powerful engine along with the M version, improved handling, bigger tires, etc...as the way to go. However, I have been very happy with this car. We aren't ever going to take it to the track nor are we looking to push it to the extreme limits of its capabilities. The 4 cylinder 255 horsepower engine offers plenty of power and torque and the car is nicely balanced with the lighter front end due to the smaller engine. The car is refined and the seats are very comfortable. The trunk is larger than I would have expected and the sound proofing is very good. Usually, driving a convertible with the top up is a noisy and unpleasant experience but that is not the case with the Z4. This car could be a legitimate daily driver for most of the year. We got it in the middle of December after waiting 4 months for it to be built. Knowing that my wife would want to drive it on nicer winter days, I swapped out the summer tires for a set of all season Goodyear Eagles and we'll switch them back when the weather warms up in the Spring. Pluses - refined ride - fun to drive - comfortable seats - high quality interior - excellent infotainment system with a bit of a learning curve - quick and responsive without being dangerously fast - again we're looking to have fun on twisty roads, not to break lap records - 8 Speed Automatic Transmission is fantastic - very quick and smooth - Excellent Gas Mileage - especially on the highway. Minuses - BMW upgrades can add up quickly - requires Premium Fuel (no real surprise) - Steering - its electronic so it feels a bit like a video game - brakes are grabby at low speeds so they require some delicate feathering - visibility isn't great with the top up - Minimal storage in the cabin but hey - its a convertible two seater so this isn't a shocker. Overall - she loves the car and I am impressed, it is fun on twisty roads but very comfortable for longer trips with a trunk that allows for weekend getaways and trips to the grocery store, it could be legitimate daily driver.

Fans of the manual transmission, rejoice: The BMW Z4 roadster adds a new six-speed stick-shift option to its roster for 2025. Available exclusively on the more powerful Z4 M40i trim, the new DIY gearbox — or "Handschalter" option, per Ze Germans — is part of a $3,500 package that includes a number of other meaningful upgrades, all designed to make BMW's little droptop more engaging to drive.

The addition of a manual transmission isn't too much of a surprise, considering the BMW Z4's fraternal twin, the Toyota GR Supra, added a six-speed stick to its roster in 2023. That said, BMW says the Z4's six-speed — which is sourced from ZF — has undergone significant engineering to make it feel like the company's other manuals.

In addition to the six-speed gearbox, the Z4 M40i borrows the more robust rear-axle assembly from the BMW M240i coupe. This improves the Z4's rear-end torque-vectoring characteristics and comes with a unique (read: stiffer) adaptive damper tune. The manual M40i also rides on a staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheel setup — shod in 255/35R19 and 285/30R20 tires, respectively — and has a weightier steering feel.

It'll be a few months before BMW flips Edmunds the keys to a manual Z4, but I had a chance to drive a prototype of the six-speed M40i last fall, and wow, these changes really make a difference. The added engagement of the manual transmission alone heightens the Z4's driving experience, and BMW's right: The stick shift does feel like what you'll find in an M2, M3 or M4. Combined with the extra grip from the larger rear tires, improved steering and sharper suspension reflexes, the manual Z4 does have a more enthusiastic edge. The M40i 6MT simply feels more eager and playful than other Z4s.

Full pricing for the 2025 model year Z4 will be available soon, but we don't expect it to change too much from the 2024 model's $54,595 MSRP, which includes a $995 destination charge. The more powerful Z4 M40i currently starts at $67,295 including destination, and adding the Handschalter pack would theoretically raise that price to $70,795. Again, official pricing is coming soon. The manual Z4 M40i will be sold globally, and production kicks off in March.

Edmunds spotlight: Manual vs. automatic

BMW will still sell the Z4 M40i with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but it won't come with the manual car's chassis tweaks. Even so, the automatic Z4 will continue to be the quicker of the two roadsters, able to accelerate to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, compared to 4.2 seconds with the six-speed stick. There are no power differences between the two M40i variants, however; BMW's 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with either transmission.

Manual cars will come with black exterior trim and red brake calipers, and you'll also be able to pick from one of two Handschalter-exclusive colors: San Remo Green and Frozen Deep Green. (In addition to all the others, natch.)

Competitors to consider

The Z4 shares a common platform and powertrains with the aforementioned Toyota GR Supra; the most obvious differences are the exterior design and the Supra's coupe body style. The Porsche 718 Boxtser is more performance-oriented, but its higher starting price and daunting options list are forces to be reckoned with. Conversely, the Mercedes-Benz CLE is more a relaxed cruiser with an extra pair of seats in the back.
